A 3 carat round diamond measures about 9.4 mm across, a little under two fifths of an inch, and at that size the rules change. Below three carats you can buy on carat weight and be roughly satisfied. At three carats and above, cut quality decides whether the stone looks spectacular or merely large, and the difference is visible from across a room.

A 3 carat round brilliant measures approximately 9.4 mm across, against 6.5 mm for a 1 carat. It covers a substantial portion of an average finger and is unmistakably read as a large stone.
Note the progression: 1 carat is 6.5 mm, 2 carats is 8.2 mm, 3 carats is 9.4 mm. Each additional carat adds less width than the one before, because weight grows with volume while width grows with a single dimension.

These are typical face-up sizes for well proportioned stones at the classic ratio for each shape. A real stone can differ by a few tenths of a millimeter depending on how deep it is cut.
Because proportional errors scale with the stone.
A slightly deep pavilion on a 1 carat stone costs a little brilliance and hides a little weight. The same proportional error on a 3 carat stone hides a visible amount of weight in the depth, so the diamond looks smaller than its carat suggests and shows a dark center where light should be returning.
The practical rule at this size: pay for cut before carat. A well cut 2.8 carat stone outperforms a poorly cut 3.2 carat stone on every measure that matters, and usually costs less.
Elongated cuts, but for a different reason than at smaller sizes. At 1 carat, elongation is about looking bigger. At 3 carats, it is about looking proportionate.
A 3 carat round concentrates a lot of mass into a circle, which can look almost spherical on a slim finger. A radiant, oval or emerald at the same weight distributes that mass along the finger and reads as elegant rather than simply large. A 3 carat oval measures about 11.1 × 8.2 mm and an emerald about 10.1 × 7.2 mm, against 9.4 mm for the round. On the finger, the eye judges a stone against the width of the finger beside it. A 3 carat round, 9.4 mm across, covers this much of the finger's width:

A stronger one than most people assume. Three carats is heavy enough that a standard four-prong head will loosen over years of daily wear.

Profile height is the other consideration. A low setting at 3 carats is far more wearable. A high cathedral setting puts a 9 mm stone well above the finger, where it catches on everything.
Three carats is where the lab grown price advantage becomes decisive rather than merely helpful. Mined diamond prices rise exponentially with carat weight, because large rough is genuinely rare. Lab grown prices rise far more gently.
The result is that a 3 carat lab grown diamond in VVS-VS clarity and D-E-F color sits in a price range where a mined equivalent would be several times higher. This is the size at which most buyers who wanted a large stone discover they can actually have one.
A 3 carat round is about 9.4 mm across. It covers about 60 percent of the width of a US size 5 finger, 55 percent of a size 6.5 and 52 percent of a size 8.
That is personal, but an oval wears narrower across the finger than a round of the same weight. A 3 carat oval is about 11.1 × 8.2 mm, so on a US size 6.5 finger its width covers about 49 percent of the finger, against 55 percent for a 3 carat round, while its length runs along the finger.
A 3.5 carat round measures about 9.9 mm across and covers about 58 percent of the width of a US size 6.5 finger, only about half a millimeter wider than a 3 carat.
