Should the side stones match the centre shape?

Not necessarily. Matching shapes read classic and symmetrical. Contrasting shapes are more distinctive: tapered baguettes or trapezoids beside a radiant, pears beside an oval, trillions beside an emerald cut. The side stones should be clearly smaller either way, or the eye cannot find the centre.

How much do side stones add visually?

A well-proportioned three stone ring reads roughly half a carat larger than its centre stone alone, because the eye measures the full width of the setting rather than the centre in isolation.
