Fancy coloured lab grown diamonds are real diamonds whose colour comes from trace elements or structural features introduced during growth: nitrogen gives yellow, boron gives blue, and post-growth treatment produces pink and green. They are graded by colour intensity rather than on the D-to-Z colourless scale, so the usual D-E-F grading does not apply to them. Why are coloured diamonds graded differently?

The D-to-Z scale measures how little tint a stone has, so it stops being meaningful once colour is the point. Fancy stones are graded on hue, tone and saturation instead, from Faint through to Fancy Vivid. More saturation means more value, which is the opposite of colourless grading.

Which metal suits a coloured stone?

White metal makes the colour read more strongly by contrast, which is why fancy yellow is often set in a white gold or platinum head. Matching the metal to the stone, yellow gold with a yellow diamond, softens the effect and makes the colour look deeper but less distinct.
