Moissanite is not a diamond. It is silicon carbide, a separate gemstone first identified in a meteorite crater in 1893 and now grown in laboratories. It is the closest stone to diamond in hardness and the only one that out-sparkles it. How is moissanite different from a lab grown diamond?

Different material entirely. A lab grown diamond is carbon and tests as diamond because it is diamond. Moissanite is silicon carbide and tests as moissanite. Moissanite has higher refractive index, so it throws more coloured light, often called fire, which some people prefer and others find too flashy for an engagement ring.

How hard is moissanite?

9.25 on the Mohs scale, against 10 for diamond. That makes it the second hardest gemstone used in jewelry and entirely suitable for daily wear over decades.
