The heart cut is a modified brilliant with a cleft at the top and a point at the base. It is the hardest common shape to cut well, because the two lobes must be perfectly symmetrical or the whole stone looks wrong, and symmetry is the first thing the eye judges. What makes a good heart cut?

Symmetry above everything. Draw a line down the centre: both lobes should be the same width and height, the cleft should be sharp and centred, and the point should sit directly below it. Even a small imbalance is obvious once seen and cannot be unseen.

What carat weight works for a heart?

Below about 0.75 carat the shape becomes hard to read on the finger, and a heart that is not recognisably a heart loses its whole point. Most buyers choose 1 carat or above.
