A 2 carat round diamond measures about 8.2 mm across, roughly a third of an inch. It weighs twice as much as a 1 carat diamond but does not look twice as big, and understanding why is the key to spending well at this size.

A 2 carat round brilliant measures approximately 8.2 mm across, against 6.5 mm for a 1 carat. That is roughly 26 percent wider, not 100 percent.
The reason is geometry. Carat measures weight, and a diamond is three-dimensional. Doubling the weight increases each dimension by only about the cube root of two, which is around 1.26. The stone gains most of its extra weight in depth, where you cannot see it.
This single fact should change how you shop at 2 carats. Because width grows slowly, shape and setting affect apparent size more than carat weight does.

These are typical face-up sizes for well proportioned stones at the classic ratio for each shape. A real stone can differ by a few tenths of a millimeter depending on how deep it is cut.
An elongated cut at 2 carats runs noticeably further along the finger than a round of identical weight: about 12.6 mm for a marquise and 9.7 mm for an oval, against 8.2 mm. If visual size is your priority, this is where to find it.
On the finger, the eye judges a stone against the width of the finger beside it. A 2 carat round, 8.2 mm across, covers this much of the finger's width:

Here is the comparison that matters. A 2 carat lab grown diamond of VVS-VS clarity and D-E-F color typically costs less than a 1 carat mined diamond of the same grade.
Same material. Same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. Same refractive index, so the same brilliance and fire. The differences are origin and rarity, neither of which is visible in the stone.
For most buyers that makes the answer straightforward: at a given budget, lab grown buys roughly double the carat at the same quality, or the same carat at much higher clarity and color.
Yes, and this is often overlooked. A 2 carat stone is heavy enough to work a four-prong setting loose over years of wear. Ronora sets 2 carat and above with six prongs or a bezel, on a shank reinforced in 14K gold or platinum.
Profile height also starts to matter. A high cathedral setting at 2 carats catches on clothing and sleeves noticeably more than at 1 carat. A lower setting wears better day to day.
It is bold on a small hand, but not too big if it is what you love. On a US size 4 finger, 14.9 mm across, a 2 carat round covers about 55 percent of the width, against about 47 percent on a size 7. An oval or pear of the same weight is narrower across the finger and can feel more balanced.
