A 1 carat round diamond measures about 6.5 mm across, a little over a quarter of an inch. Carat itself is a measure of weight, not size: one carat equals exactly 0.2 grams. Two stones of identical carat weight can look noticeably different on the hand, which is the single most useful thing to understand before buying one.

Shape changes the answer considerably, because carat measures weight and different cuts distribute that weight differently. A shape that spreads weight across the surface looks larger. A shape that carries weight in its depth looks smaller.

These are typical face-up sizes for well proportioned stones at the classic ratio for each shape. A real stone can differ by a few tenths of a millimeter depending on how deep it is cut.
Length. A 1 carat marquise measures about 10.0 mm from tip to tip, against 6.5 mm across for a round, while covering about the same face-up area. That length runs along the finger rather than across it, which the eye reads as a larger stone on a slimmer hand.
The trade is depth. Elongated shapes are shallower, so they can show a bow-tie, a dark band across the center where the setting blocks light. In a well cut stone it is faint. In a poorly cut one it is permanent and obvious.
On the finger, the eye judges a stone against the width of the finger beside it. A 1 carat round, 6.5 mm across, covers this much of the finger's width:

On the ear, a pair of 1 carat studs means one carat in each ear: each stud is about 6.5 mm across and the pair is 2 carats total weight. If a pair is sold as 1 carat total weight, each stud is half a carat and about 5.2 mm across. See 1 carat studs on an ear.

A lab grown diamond typically costs 60 to 80 percent less than a mined stone of the same carat, cut, clarity and color. They are the same material with the same hardness and optical properties, so the difference is origin and rarity rather than quality.
That gap is why most buyers who switch to lab grown do not simply save money. They move up a carat, or into a better cut, for the budget they already had.
A halo, comfortably. A ring of small diamonds around the center blurs its outline, so the eye reads the whole cluster as one stone. A halo can add the appearance of half a carat or more.
A hidden halo does something different: it sits underneath the stone and adds light from the side without changing the outline from above. Choose it if you want a solitaire silhouette with more sparkle, not more apparent size.
It is the most requested size for a reason. It reads clearly as a center stone from across a room, and it is the threshold where Ronora includes IGI certification as standard. Above it, price rises faster than apparent size does.
If you are deciding between neighboring sizes, a half carat round is about 5.2 mm across and a 1.5 carat round about 7.4 mm.
It is a clear, confident center stone rather than a delicate one. At 6.5 mm across, a 1 carat round covers about 38 percent of the width of a US size 6.5 finger, which is 16.9 mm across.
Not usually, but it does look bigger on a small hand. On a US size 4 finger, 14.9 mm across, a 1 carat round covers about 44 percent of the width, against about 38 percent on a size 7. On a small hand, a round, cushion or Asscher sits more compactly than a long marquise.
There is no single right size, so compare them at actual size. On a US size 7 finger, 17.3 mm across, a 1 carat round covers about 38 percent of the width, a 1.5 carat about 43 percent and a 2 carat about 47 percent.
A 1 carat round stud is about 6.5 mm across, and a 1 carat princess stud about 5.5 mm square. A pair of 1 carat studs is 2 carats total weight.
