When you shop for lab grown diamond stud earrings, the carat weight shown is usually the total for the pair. A 1 carat pair holds two half carat diamonds of about 5.2 mm each, and a 2 carat pair holds two 1 carat diamonds of about 6.5 mm each. For a first pair worn every day, 1 to 1.5 carats total is an easy size to live with; 2 carats and above is a clear statement.

This guide shows how big each size looks, how 1 carat and 2 carat studs compare, and how to choose the shape, backs and metal.

Millimeter figures are for well proportioned stones and individual stones vary a little. To see any size on an ear lobe at true scale, use our stud size on the ear calculator.

1 carat vs 2 carat diamond stud earrings

A 1 carat pair is two diamonds of about 5.2 mm. They sit neatly on the lobe, go with jeans as easily as an evening dress, and make a good first pair or a gift for someone who wears small jewelry.

A 2 carat pair is two 1 carat diamonds of about 6.5 mm, roughly a quarter wider than a 1 carat pair. That extra width is easy to see across a room, so a 2 carat pair feels like a real upgrade for someone who already owns small studs. Because each earring holds a diamond of 1 carat, each stone also comes with an IGI report.

The size of the ear lobe matters too. On a small lobe a 6.5 mm stud covers more of the lobe and looks larger. If you are unsure, 1.5 carats total, two stones of about 5.9 mm, sits in between.

Choose the shape

At the same carat weight, a cushion looks a little smaller face up than a round: a 1 carat cushion is about 5.5 mm square, against 6.5 mm for a 1 carat round. An emerald cut looks longer and narrower.

Screw backs or push backs?

Push backs slide onto the post and are quick to put on and take off. Screw backs thread onto the post, so they take a few seconds longer but hold more securely, which many people prefer for larger stones and for studs worn every day. Our four prong studs and blue halo studs have screw backs, and our cushion cut studs have push backs. Each product page lists its back.

Choose the metal

Most of our studs are made in 9K, 14K or 18K solid gold in white, yellow or rose, in platinum and in 925 sterling silver; each product page lists its metals. White gold and platinum make white diamonds look crisp and bright. Yellow and rose gold add warmth and suit someone who already wears warm metals. If you cannot tell, look at the jewelry she wears most and match it.

Diamond quality, certificates and warranty

Our white stud earrings use lab grown diamonds graded D-E-F (colorless), VVS-VS clarity and Excellent cut. They are real diamonds, grown with CVD technology, with the same hardness and sparkle as mined diamonds.

Every gold pair comes with an SGL jewelry certificate and every platinum pair with an ITPL certificate. When each earring holds a lab grown diamond of 1 carat or more, which means pairs of 2 carats total and above, those stones also come with an IGI report. Every piece has a lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects. If a stone comes loose because of a manufacturing fault, we reset or replace it free under our lifetime warranty. A stone lost through a knock or everyday wear can be replaced as a paid repair, and we always quote first.

How big are 1 carat diamond stud earrings?

A 1 carat pair of round studs holds two half carat diamonds of about 5.2 mm each. If you mean 1 carat in each earring, a 2 carat pair, each round diamond measures about 6.5 mm across.

Are lab grown diamond earrings real diamonds?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, made of the same carbon crystal as mined diamonds, with the same hardness and sparkle. Ours are grown with CVD technology and our white diamonds are graded D-E-F (colorless), VVS-VS clarity and Excellent cut.

Are screw backs better than push backs?

Screw backs hold more securely, which is why many people choose them for larger studs or for earrings worn every day. Push backs are quicker to put on. Each of our product pages lists the back for that pair.
