Huggie earrings are small, solid hoops that hug the earlobe closely, usually with an inner diameter of about 6 to 12 mm and a hinged snap closure. Because they sit snug with nothing hanging down, they are easy to wear every day and comfortable for most people to sleep in. In an ear stack they usually go in the second hole, with a stud or a drop in the first hole and a tiny stud higher up.
This guide covers huggie sizes in millimetres, how to build an ear stack with studs, huggies and drops, which metal to choose, and how to care for earrings you wear day and night. Every piece named below is a Ronora design, made to order in our workshop in Surat with lab grown diamonds.
What are huggie earrings?
A huggie is a hoop small enough to wrap around the edge of the lobe with little or no gap. The band is usually thicker than a classic hoop, often 2 to 3 mm, so a huggie looks neat and solid rather than delicate. Most huggies open on a small hinge and click shut, so there is no separate back to lose.
Diamond huggies add a row of stones across the front, where they face forward when worn. Our lab grown diamond huggie hoops carry a single row of prong set round diamonds across the front of each hoop, about 1.2 carats across the pair, on a hinged snap closure.

Huggie or hoop: what is the difference?
Size and fit. A huggie sits close to the lobe and barely moves. A hoop is larger, roughly 15 mm across and up, and hangs below the lobe so it swings as you move. Small hoops of about 12 to 15 mm sit in between: they hug a fuller lobe and hang a little on a smaller one.
Huggie earring sizes in mm
Huggies are sized by inner diameter, the space inside the hoop. That number decides how closely the hoop hugs your lobe.
Typical huggie and small hoop sizes (inner diameter)
| Inner diameter |
How it sits |
Works well for |
| 6 to 7 mm |
Very snug, tight to the edge of the ear |
Upper lobe, second or third hole, small lobes |
| 8 to 9 mm |
Snug, the classic huggie look |
First or second hole on most lobes |
| 10 to 12 mm |
Hugs with a little room |
First hole, fuller lobes, huggies with a drop |
| 13 to 15 mm |
Small hoop that hangs a little |
First hole, a bolder stack |
| 16 mm and above |
A hoop that hangs and moves |
First hole, evenings |
How to find your size: in a mirror, measure with a ruler from the centre of your piercing to the nearest edge of your ear. Choose an inner diameter one to two millimetres larger than that number, so the hoop closes without pinching. The further your piercing sits from the edge, the larger the huggie you need.
Every pair of Ronora huggies is made to order. If you need an exact inner diameter, for a second or third hole for example, contact us before you order and we will tell you the measurement of the pair you are looking at.
How to build an ear stack
An ear stack is two or more earrings worn together in several piercings on one ear. A few simple rules keep it looking calm rather than busy:
-
Largest at the bottom. Put the biggest piece in the first hole and let each piece get smaller as you go up the ear.
-
One hero piece. Let one earring carry the sparkle, such as a drop or a larger stud, and keep the others simple.
-
Repeat something. Repeat a shape, a metal or a stone so the pieces look as if they belong together.
-
Leave a little space. Earrings that touch can rub against each other, so leave a small gap between pieces.
Ear stacks are one of the fastest growing jewelry ideas on Pinterest this year. Here are four you can build from our collection.
1. The everyday two
Round studs in the first hole and diamond huggies in the second. Choose our four prong round studs in 1 carat total, two diamonds of about 5.2 mm each, with screw backs that stay put. Add the diamond huggie hoops above them. It is the stack most people start with, and it works from the office to dinner.
2. The three hole stack
Start with huggie drop earrings in the first hole: a plain gold huggie with a round lab grown diamond hanging below it, from 2 carats total (1 carat in each earring, about 6.5 mm). Put the diamond huggie hoops in the second hole and small round studs of 0.5 carat total, about 4.1 mm each, in the third.

3. Mixed shapes for a modern stack
If round feels too classic, mix shapes. The mixed shape cluster studs set an emerald cut, a pear and an oval together on each ear, laid out as a left and a right. Pair them with small round studs or the diamond huggies so the cluster stays the hero. Emerald cut studs are another clean choice for the first hole.
4. The one piercing stack
Only one hole in each ear? The pear ear jacket earrings give a stacked look from a single piercing: one pear diamond sits on the front of the lobe and a second pear hangs just below it on a jacket bar behind the lobe. The open circle earrings are another option. From the front they read as a small hoop of round and marquise diamonds, but they wear on a post with a push back.

For evenings, swap the first hole piece for a drop, such as the baguette kite drop earrings, and keep the huggies and small studs above it.
Stud sizes that work in a stack
Stud carat weights are given for the pair, so each earring holds half. These are the round sizes we use across our guides:

Which metal for huggies and ear stacks?
Every earring named in this guide can be made in 9K, 14K or 18K solid gold in white, yellow or rose, in platinum, or in 925 sterling silver.
Metals for earrings you wear every day
| Metal |
Precious metal content |
Good to know |
| 9K gold |
37.5% gold |
The most affordable solid gold, and a hard alloy that stands up well to daily wear. The colour is a little softer than higher karats. |
| 14K gold |
58.5% gold |
The everyday favourite: rich colour and good durability. |
| 18K gold |
75% gold |
The deepest colour and the most gold, a little softer than 14K. |
| Platinum |
95% platinum |
Naturally white and heavy, and often chosen by people with sensitive ears. |
| 925 sterling silver |
92.5% silver |
The lowest price. Silver darkens over time, so it needs a polish now and then. |
You do not need to match every piece. Two metals, such as yellow gold huggies with white gold studs, look deliberate when the mix repeats on both ears. If you prefer a calm look, keep the whole stack in one metal.
Can you sleep in huggie earrings?
Most people can. Hinged huggies sit close to the lobe with no separate back, so there is little to press into your neck or catch on the pillow. Studs with large prongs or long posts are less comfortable at night, and drops should come out before bed because the hanging stone can catch on bedding or hair.
A few habits keep everyday earrings looking new:
- Check that the hinge clicks fully shut each time you put huggies on.
- Take earrings out before swimming in chlorinated pools or hot tubs, and before cleaning with household chemicals.
- Put on hairspray, perfume and lotion first, then your earrings.
- Clean them in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush, then dry them with a soft cloth.
- Only wear fine jewelry in a fully healed piercing. For a new or cartilage piercing, ask your piercer what to wear first.
Solid gold and platinum do not tarnish. Sterling silver slowly darkens with air and skin contact, so a silver pair worn day and night needs cleaning more often.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between huggie and hoop earrings?
A huggie is a small, usually thicker hoop that sits snug against the earlobe, often 6 to 12 mm on the inside. A hoop is larger and hangs below the lobe, so it moves as you do.
What size huggie earrings should I get?
Measure from the centre of your piercing to the nearest edge of your ear and choose an inner diameter one to two millimetres larger. For most first holes that means about 8 to 12 mm; second and upper lobe holes often take 6 to 9 mm.
Can you sleep in huggie earrings?
Most people find hinged huggies comfortable to sleep in, because they sit close to the lobe and have no back to press into the neck. Take drop earrings out at night, and choose solid gold or platinum for a pair that stays in day and night.
Which hole should huggies go in?
Huggies suit any hole, but in an ear stack they usually sit in the second hole, between a stud or drop in the first hole and a small stud higher up. A single pair of diamond huggies in the first hole also looks complete on its own.
Are your huggie earrings real diamonds?
Yes. Our huggies are set with lab grown diamonds, real diamonds with the same hardness and sparkle as mined diamonds, graded D-E-F colourless, VVS-VS clarity and Excellent cut. Gold pairs come with an SGL jewelry certificate and platinum pairs with an ITPL certificate, and the huggie drop earrings, with 1 carat or more in each earring, also come with an IGI report for each stone.
Can I mix gold colours in an ear stack?
Yes. Mixed metals look deliberate when the mix repeats, for example yellow gold huggies with white gold studs on both ears. For a calm look, keep every piece in one metal.
