A promise ring marks a serious commitment that is not yet an engagement. Most people wear it on the ring finger of the left hand, and many move it to the right hand once an engagement ring arrives. Others start on the right ring finger so nobody mistakes it for an engagement ring.
It says you mean to stay together without naming a date. Couples give one to show the relationship is exclusive and going somewhere, without starting wedding plans. It has no legal weight and no fixed rules, so it is worth agreeing out loud on what yours means.
What does a promise ring actually mean?
It means whatever the two of you agree it means, and that agreement counts for more than any tradition. In practice it usually stands for one of these:
- Exclusivity, a public sign that the relationship is closed to anyone else.
- A step before engagement, meaning a proposal will follow when the time is right.
- A milestone, such as a first anniversary, a move across the country or a stretch of time apart.
- Friendship, or a promise to yourself. A promise ring can be given or bought with no romance involved at all.
A promise ring is not a proposal. If you want it read as one, propose. Hurt feelings often start when one person treats the ring as an engagement and the other sees it as a step before one, so say which you mean when you give it.

Which finger does a promise ring go on?
No rule decides it, but there is a convention. The left ring finger is the most common choice, and the right ring finger keeps the ring from being mistaken for an engagement ring.

| Where it is worn |
What it usually says |
| Left ring finger |
Committed and not yet engaged. Many people move it to the right hand when the engagement ring arrives. |
| Right ring finger |
Committed, without anyone asking whether you are engaged. It can stay there for good. |
| Middle or index finger |
A friendship ring or a promise to yourself, with no romantic reading. |
| On a chain |
Kept close when rings are not practical at work or in sport. |
In countries where wedding rings go on the right hand, many people reverse this. Stacking matters more day to day: if you expect an engagement ring later and want to wear both together, choose a promise ring with a low profile and a slim band so the two sit flat against each other. Our guide to which wedding band goes with an engagement ring works through the same fit questions.

The designs differ because the meanings do. An engagement ring is built around one stone. A promise ring is usually built around the band, with pave, a bezel set accent or two small stones side by side, which is why it can be quiet on purpose and still mean a lot.

How to choose a promise ring
First decide whether it needs to stack. If an engagement ring is likely within a year or two, a slim band with a flush or bezel setting will sit beside almost anything later. A ring that will be worn on its own leaves more freedom in height and stone size.

Then pick a style that suits her. A few of the promise rings we make show the range:
- A single small diamond: the dainty round solitaire sets one round diamond in a petite four prong head on a slim curved band.
- Two stones: the two stone bezel ring holds two round diamonds in smooth bezels along an S shaped curve, a quiet nod to the toi et moi style.
- A row of pave: the flat bar ring crosses a row of pave diamonds with a polished bar, and it stacks well.
- An open design: the open bar bypass ring pairs a pave band with a clean bar accent and open space between them.

Match the metal she already wears. Our promise rings come in solid white, yellow or rose gold, and many also in platinum or 925 sterling silver; each product page lists its metals. For a ring worn every day, 14K gold balances colour and strength well.
Put cut ahead of size. On a promise ring, a smaller diamond with a better cut looks better than a larger, poorly cut one, because cut controls how much light the stone returns, and at these sizes that shows more than carat weight. Every Ronora lab grown diamond is cut to Excellent, graded D-E-F (colourless) with VVS-VS clarity, and set in solid gold, platinum or sterling silver. Nothing is plated, since a ring worn every day has to stand up to daily wear.

Get the size right. Borrow a ring she wears on the same finger, trace the inside circle on paper, then use our ring size guide. We offer one free resize within 6 months of purchase, where the design allows.
Are lab grown diamonds suitable for a promise ring?
Yes, and the cost works especially well for promise rings. A lab grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined diamond. Ours are grown with CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) technology and graded on the same scale as mined stones. The same budget buys a better stone, which counts most on a ring where the budget is kept modest on purpose.

Every Ronora gold piece, promise rings included, comes with an SGL jewelry certificate, and every platinum piece with an ITPL certificate. Every lab grown diamond of 1 carat or more also has its own IGI report. Most promise ring stones are well under 1 carat, so most promise rings do not come with one, and we say that plainly. Our guide to reading an IGI report and an SGL certificate explains what each document shows.

Frequently asked questions
Which finger and hand does a promise ring go on?
Most people wear a promise ring on the ring finger of the left hand before they are engaged, and many move it to the right hand when the engagement ring arrives. Others wear it on the right ring finger from the start, which saves being asked whether they are engaged.
Is a promise ring the same as an engagement ring?
No. A promise ring marks a commitment, while an engagement ring marks an accepted proposal and a plan to marry. Promise rings are usually smaller and built around the band, and they set no fixed expectation.
Can a promise ring have a diamond?
Yes, most do. What sets it apart from an engagement ring is scale and emphasis. A small round or marquise stone, two stones side by side, or a row of pave is typical.
Do men wear promise rings?
Yes. A plain or flush set band in a wider profile is the usual choice, because it survives manual work without catching.
What happens to a promise ring after engagement?
Many people move it to the right hand, wear it on a chain, or keep it as the piece that marked the beginning. Nobody expects it to be given back or put away.
Does a promise ring come with a certificate?
Every Ronora promise ring in gold comes with an SGL jewelry certificate, and in platinum with an ITPL certificate. An IGI report is added only for lab grown diamonds of 1 carat or more, which most promise rings do not have.
