Ring styles carry meaning only by tradition. A three stone ring is often said to stand for past, present and future, a solitaire for one person and one promise, and an eternity band for love with no end. Many other styles, such as pave, east west and minimalist, have no traditional meaning, so couples choose them for the look and give them their own. This guide covers 15 engagement ring styles and 4 wedding ring styles. Each section gives the meaning most often given, a sourced famous example where one exists, and lab grown diamond rings from Ronora in that style.

Where a style has no traditional meaning we say so. Ronora prices in this guide are regular prices, shown as "from" the lowest price in the metal named. Prices checked on October 28, 2026.

Engagement ring styles

Solitaire

A solitaire is one diamond on a plain band, usually held by four or six prongs. Jewelers often say the single stone stands for one person and one promise. Queensmith calls it the most iconic, classic and simple engagement ring style.

Madison Beer's ring is described as an elongated cushion solitaire with four prongs on a slim band, with no halo and no accent stones (TODAY, Cosmopolitan). TODAY quotes jewelers at 6 to 10 carats and Cosmopolitan at 10 to 15 carats, so the weight is not known.

Halo

A halo surrounds the center stone with a border of small diamonds. Diamond Nexus says the style was first created to make a small center stone look larger, and that it soon became a style of its own. Jewelers often read the circle as eternal love, with the smaller stones standing for the support around the couple.

The best known halo ring is the oval sapphire ring that Princess Diana chose in 1981 and that Catherine, Princess of Wales, wears today. It is an oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds, reported at about 12 carats (Harper's Bazaar Singapore, The Court Jeweller). Prince William gave it to Catherine when he proposed in Kenya in 2010 (The Court Jeweller).

Hidden halo

A hidden halo sets the ring of small diamonds under the center stone, so you see it from the side. It has no traditional meaning of its own. From above the ring looks like a plain solitaire, which suits anyone who wants a clean look with extra sparkle in profile.

Our guides explain the style in detail: hidden halo engagement rings and hidden halo vs traditional halo.

Side stone

A side stone ring has smaller diamonds set beside the center stone, on the shoulders of the band or along its sides. The style has no traditional meaning of its own, so people choose it for the extra sparkle and the wider look on the finger. The three stone ring, below, puts one stone on each side of the center and does carry a meaning.

Queen Camilla's ring is a well known side stone ring. Prince Charles, now the King, gave it to her for their engagement in 2005. It is an emerald cut diamond with three baguette diamonds on each side, set in platinum, reported at five carats and reported to have belonged to the Queen Mother (HELLO!, Royal Central, The Court Jeweller).

Three stone

A three stone ring has a center diamond with one stone on each side. It has the best known meaning of any style: past, present and future, with the center stone for the present. According to Diamond Nexus, that is what the three stones are traditionally said to represent in a relationship. Blue Nile and Square Mile give the same reading.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, wears a three stone ring that Prince Harry designed. Its center diamond comes from Botswana, and the two diamonds beside it come from Princess Diana's personal collection, as announced in November 2017 (TODAY, ABC7 New York). Our guide to the three stone ring meaning tells the rest of the story.

Pave

Pave means the band is set with many tiny diamonds close together, so the metal almost disappears under sparkle. It is a way of setting stones and has no traditional meaning. People choose it for the brightness all the way round the band.

Selena Gomez's ring is reported as a marquise diamond on a band of small round diamonds, which ELLE calls a pave band (ELLE, TODAY).

Vintage

A vintage style ring takes its details from past eras, such as engraving, milgrain edges, antique style cuts and rich gold. Blue Nile says the style suits people who like heirloom-style character, so it is often read as a link with the past.

Tallulah Willis's ring is reported as a 4.03 carat old mine cut diamond in a honey champagne color on an angular gold band (People, INSTORE). INSTORE says the old mine cut is a cushiony shape that was most popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras. Taylor Swift's ring is reported as an old mine brilliant cut diamond on a yellow gold band (ABC News, E! News). Our guide to celebrity engagement rings in 2026 has more examples.

Nature inspired

A nature inspired ring uses leaves, vines or flowers in the stones or the band. The jeweler Bohemi says vines symbolize growth, connection and intertwined lives, and that petal shaped stones stand for beauty and renewal. Pear and marquise stones can read as leaves and petals.

We found this reading in only one jeweler's guide, so treat it as a suggestion.

Bezel

A bezel setting wraps a thin rim of metal around the stone instead of using prongs. Vrai calls the look secure and structured. It also says the bezel is one of the oldest styles in jewelry, first seen in Ancient Egyptian and Roman pieces. Roy Albers of Worthy told Showbiz Cheat Sheet that a bezel gives the diamond more protection than prongs, so the style is often linked with security.

Alessandra Ambrosio's ring is reported as an elongated cushion diamond in a yellow gold bezel (TODAY, Showbiz Cheat Sheet).

Minimalist

A minimalist ring keeps the design to a few clean lines and one or two small stones, often on an open or bypass band. It has no traditional meaning, and people usually choose it for light, everyday wear.

Many minimalist rings are also given as promise rings. See our minimalist rings.

Colored diamond

A colored diamond ring uses a fancy colored stone, such as yellow, pink or green, instead of a colorless one. Color meanings are modern jewelry lore. Yellow is linked with love and optimism (Peter Norman), and pink diamonds with love, passion and tenderness (The Perth Mint). Ronora offers fancy yellow, pink, green and blue lab grown diamonds.

Carmen Montero Mundt's ring is reported as a yellow oval diamond with a white diamond on each side (marie claire Australia, Showbiz Cheat Sheet). Blake Lively's ring is reported as a light pink oval diamond in a rose gold setting with pave diamonds (PureWow, Gulf News).

Promise ring

A promise ring marks a serious commitment that is not yet an engagement. It stands for whatever the two people agree it means, so it is worth saying out loud when you give it. Our guide covers which finger it goes on and how a promise ring differs from an engagement ring: what does a promise ring mean.

Toi et moi

A toi et moi ring holds two stones side by side, usually angled toward each other. The name is French for "you and me", and the style is read as two people coming together in one ring (Blue Nile).

The most famous toi et moi in history is the ring Napoleon gave Josephine when they became engaged in 1796. It has a diamond and a sapphire, and it sold at auction in 2013 (The Jewellery Editor, Wendy Brandes).

Our toi et moi ring guide explains which stone shapes pair well and how the style differs from a three stone ring.

East west

An east west ring sets an elongated stone sideways across the finger instead of along it. It is a modern look and has no traditional meaning, so couples can give it their own.

People reported in January 2025 that Zendaya's ring is set horizontally, which it called rare, and that details of the ring were not confirmed (People).

Cluster

A cluster ring groups several stones close together so they read as one larger shape, often a flower or a bouquet. It has no single traditional meaning. The sapphire ring of Diana and Catherine, in the halo section above, is also described as a sapphire in a cluster of 14 diamonds (The Court Jeweller), so the halo and the cluster are close relatives.

Wedding ring styles

Wedding rings are chosen to sit with the engagement ring, so shape and fit matter as much as meaning. Our guide to which wedding band goes with your engagement ring shows which settings need a curve.

Eternity band

An eternity band is set with diamonds all the way round, or part of the way round in a half or partial eternity. A ring has no beginning and no end, and the style is often said to stand for love without end. The Perth Mint calls the ring a timeless symbol of love, and Square Mile says the continuous row of diamonds symbolises lasting commitment.

Taylor Swift's wedding band is reported as a yellow gold partial eternity band, with round diamonds on the front and plain gold at the back (TODAY, InStyle). Read more in our guide to Taylor Swift's wedding band.

Curved band

A curved or contour band bends around the engagement ring so the two sit flush with no gap. The shape is mostly practical, because pear and marquise stones, halos and tall settings can leave a gap beside a straight band. Its job is the fit, so it has no traditional meaning.

Melanie Fitzpatrick, co-founder of the jewelry brand LeMel, says Taylor Swift's wedding band sits completely flush with her engagement ring (TODAY).

Anniversary ring

An anniversary ring marks a shared milestone, from a first year to a renewal of vows, and is worn with the wedding band or on its own. Square Mile says anniversary rings celebrate the journey of a relationship, that a three stone ring traditionally shows past, present and future, and that an eternity style shows lasting commitment.

Ronora's anniversary rings include rows of graduated and evenly spaced stones, and the meaning is whatever the milestone means to you. See our anniversary rings.

Men's ring

Ronora's men's diamond rings are mostly wide bands and signets with one stone or a face of pave diamonds. Signet rings were once working tools: the Victoria and Albert Museum records an Italian signet ring from 1550 to 1575 that would have been pressed into hot wax to seal a letter or packet. Today a signet or a wide band carries no fixed engagement meaning.

What the main diamond shapes are said to mean

Shape meanings are the loosest of all. They come from jewelry guides, and only a few have a story behind them. Our shape guides show each shape in millimeters.

Shape Often said to mean Source or example
Round Endless love, because a circle has no beginning or end Vrai
Oval Balance, and a love story with a modern twist Vrai
Pear Tears of joy, and two shapes joined into one Peter Norman, Angara
Marquise No firm meaning; a popular legend about a king and his favorite (below) The Jewellery Editor, Diamond Rocks
Heart Love, the plainest symbol of all No tradition needed
Emerald cut Strength, sophistication and a nod to the Art Deco era Vrai; Grace Kelly's ring (below)

A popular legend says King Louis XV of France asked his jewelers for a stone shaped like the smile of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour, and the cut took her title. The Jewellery Editor calls this a legend and gives no year, and Diamond Rocks says the stone copied her lips, so read it as a good story.

Two famous rings are emerald cuts. Grace Kelly's engagement ring from Prince Rainier is reported as an emerald cut diamond of 10.47 carats with baguette side diamonds (HELLO!, The Jewellery Editor). Queen Camilla's ring, in the side stone section, is an emerald cut with baguettes too.

How to choose a style when meaning matters

For a clear traditional meaning, choose a three stone ring (past, present and future), a toi et moi (you and me), a solitaire (one person, one promise) or an eternity band (love without end). For a meaning of your own, choose a minimalist, east west, pave or cluster ring and decide together what it stands for. If you like history, look at vintage, bezel and signet styles.

Frequently asked questions

Do engagement ring styles really have meanings?

Only by tradition. A few styles have a widely repeated reading, such as three stone (past, present and future), solitaire (one person, one promise) and eternity band (love without end). Those readings come mostly from jewelers and jewelry guides, and many styles, such as pave, east west and minimalist, have none. The best meaning is the one the two of you agree on.

Which ring style is best if I want the ring to mean something?

A three stone ring has the clearest and most repeated meaning: past, present and future. A toi et moi ring stands for "you and me", a solitaire for one person and one promise, and an eternity band for love without end. Our guides cover the three stone ring meaning and the toi et moi ring in more detail.

What do the different diamond shapes mean?

Shape meanings are looser than style meanings. Round is often linked with endless love, oval with balance, pear with tears of joy and emerald cut with Art Deco elegance. The marquise story about King Louis XV is a legend. The table above names a source wherever there is one.

How much does a ring in each style cost in lab grown diamond?

Listed Ronora rings in this guide start from $290 for a slim pave eternity band and from $300 for a dainty solitaire ring, both in 925 silver. Engagement rings with a larger center stone start higher, for example $540 for an oval solitaire and $870 for a round three stone ring. Prices rise with carat weight and with gold or platinum, and each ring page shows the price for the carat weight and metal you pick. Prices checked on October 28, 2026.

Can you make a ring in a style or with a meaning I like?

Yes. We can make a ring in this style for you, in lab grown diamond and the metal you choose, and we send you a design and price before anything is made. Custom designs are final sale, while listed rings can be returned or exchanged within 15 days, rings made to size included.

What certificates come with a Ronora ring?

Every lab grown diamond of 1 carat or more has its own IGI report, and diamonds under 1 carat do not have an IGI report. Every gold piece comes with an SGL jewelry certificate and every platinum piece with an ITPL jewelry certificate. Silver pieces have no jewelry certificate.
