Why does an oval look larger than a round?

Because it spreads its weight across the surface rather than down into depth. A 1 carat oval typically presents around 10 percent more visible area than a 1 carat round, and its elongated outline covers more of the finger, which exaggerates the effect further.

What is the bow-tie effect?

A dark band across the centre of an elongated stone, caused by the setting blocking light from reaching the middle facets. Every oval has one to some degree. In a well cut stone it is faint and only visible at certain angles; in a poorly cut one it is obvious and permanent.
