Why does a marquise look so large?

Its long, pointed outline is shallow relative to its footprint, so almost all the carat weight sits where it can be seen. A 1 carat marquise can present roughly 15 percent more surface area than a 1 carat round, and its length visually slims the finger.

What should you check on a marquise?

Two things. Symmetry, since both points must align on a single axis and any tilt is immediately visible. And the points themselves, which are the most fragile part of any diamond shape and should always be protected by V-prongs.

Which orientation is used? North-south along the finger is traditional and elongating. East-west set marquise stones are increasingly used in bands and eternity rings for a more modern line.
