How big is a 5 carat diamond in millimeters?

Carat is a measure of weight, not size: 5 carats is exactly 1 gram. A 5 carat round weighs five times as much as a 1 carat but measures only about 71 percent wider, 11.1 mm against 6.5 mm. Compared with a 4 carat round at 10.3 mm, the fifth carat adds only about 0.8 mm across.

What does a 5 carat diamond look like?

Commanding. At this weight the shape of the stone sets the whole character of the ring. As a round it is a circle about 11.1 mm across. As an emerald cut it is a long, calm rectangle of about 12.0 × 8.5 mm, with step facets that show the inside of the stone. As an oval it measures about 13.2 × 9.7 mm, and as a marquise about 17.1 × 8.5 mm, which runs a long way along the finger.

How big does a 5 carat diamond look on the hand, ear and neck?

On the finger, the eye judges a stone against the width of the finger beside it. A 5 carat round, 11.1 mm across, covers this much of the finger's width:

US ring size Finger width Width covered by a 5 carat round
5 15.7 mm about 71%
6.5 16.9 mm about 66%
8 18.1 mm about 61%

On a size 5 finger a 5 carat round covers more than two thirds of the width, and even on a size 8 it covers about three fifths. See a 5 carat ring on your own ring size.

On the ear, a pair of 5 carat studs means five carats in each ear: each stud is about 11.1 mm across and the pair is 10 carats total weight. If a pair is sold as 5 carats total weight, each stud is 2.5 carats and about 8.8 mm across, a far more everyday size. See 5 carat studs on an ear.

On the neck, a 5 carat round pendant is the same 11.1 mm stone with the bail above it. A 5 carat pear hung point up measures about 13.6 × 9.1 mm. See a 5 carat pendant on a neckline.

Is a 5 carat diamond too big?

That depends on the hand and the wearer, not on a rule. On a US size 4 finger, 14.9 mm across, a 5 carat round covers about 75 percent of the width; on a size 8 finger, about 61 percent. If you love the weight but want it to sit more gracefully, choose an elongated shape: a 5 carat oval or emerald is narrower across the finger than a round and runs along it instead.

Setting profile matters as much as carat. In a high setting a 5 carat stone stands well above the finger. In a low setting with six prongs or a bezel it wears closer and more securely.

What does a 5 carat diamond need?

Cut first. Proportional errors scale with the stone, so a pavilion cut slightly too deep hides a visible amount of weight and can leave a dark center where light should return. At 5 carats, pay for cut before carat.

Then a secure setting: six prongs or a full bezel on a reinforced shank, rather than a standard four-prong head, which a stone of this weight can work loose over years of wear. Platinum is the more secure metal at this weight because it bends rather than snaps.

What does a 5 carat lab grown diamond cost?

Mined diamond prices rise steeply with carat weight, because large rough is genuinely rare. Lab grown prices rise far more gently. A lab grown diamond typically costs 60 to 80 percent less than a mined diamond of the same carat, cut, clarity and color. They are the same material with the same hardness and optical properties, so the difference is origin and rarity rather than quality.

Frequently asked questions

How big is 5 carats in mm?

A 5 carat round diamond is about 11.1 mm across. In other shapes, 5 carats measures about 13.2 × 9.7 mm as an oval, 12.0 × 8.5 mm as an emerald, 9.4 × 9.4 mm as a cushion or princess and 13.6 × 9.1 mm as a pear.

Is a 5 carat diamond big?

Yes, very. A 5 carat round covers about 66 percent of the width of a US size 6.5 finger, against about 38 percent for a 1 carat and 55 percent for a 3 carat.

How big is a 5 carat emerald cut diamond?

About 12.0 × 8.5 mm at the classic 1.4 length to width ratio. Its long step facets work like a window into the stone, which is why clarity matters more in a large emerald cut than in a brilliant cut of the same weight.

What does a 5 carat diamond look like on a small hand?

Bold. On a US size 4 finger, 14.9 mm across, a 5 carat round covers about 75 percent of the width. An oval or emerald of the same weight is narrower across the finger and can look more balanced.

Does a 5 carat lab grown diamond come certified?

At Ronora, yes. Every lab grown diamond center stone of 1 carat and above ships with an IGI certificate and a laser-inscribed report number on the girdle.

Is a 5 carat lab grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. It is carbon in the same crystal structure, with the same hardness and optical properties as a mined diamond, so it measures the same size as a mined diamond of the same carat weight and cut.

Will a 5 carat lab grown diamond hold its value?

Honestly, no diamond is an investment, mined or lab grown. Resale on any diamond is a fraction of retail. Buy it because you want to wear it.
