A 4 carat round diamond measures about 10.3 mm across, roughly two fifths of an inch. On a US size 6.5 finger it covers about 61 percent of the finger's width, so it reads unmistakably as a statement stone.

How big is a 4 carat diamond in millimeters?

Carat is a measure of weight, not size: 4 carats is exactly 0.8 grams. A 4 carat stone weighs four times as much as a 1 carat, yet a 4 carat round is only about 59 percent wider, 10.3 mm against 6.5 mm. The rest of the extra weight sits in the depth of the stone, where you cannot see it from above.

Shape Size at 4 carats (length × width) How it reads
Round 10.3 × 10.3 mm The baseline
Marquise 15.9 × 7.9 mm Longest for its weight
Dutch Marquise 14.2 × 7.7 mm Long, six-sided outline
Pear 12.6 × 8.4 mm Looks larger than a round
Oval 12.2 × 9.0 mm Looks larger than a round
Emerald 11.1 × 7.9 mm Slightly longer, slimmer
Heart 10.3 × 10.3 mm Same width as a round
Elongated cushion 9.9 × 7.6 mm Slimmer, soft corners
Radiant 9.9 × 7.6 mm Slimmer, cut corners
Princess 8.7 × 8.7 mm Compact square
Cushion 8.7 × 8.7 mm Compact, soft corners
Asscher 8.7 × 8.7 mm Compact square, step cut

What does a 4 carat diamond look like?

Big, bright and impossible to miss. A 4 carat stone covers more than half the width of most fingers, and its outline reads clearly from across a room.

That scale changes what matters. Shape now decides proportion as much as size. A 4 carat round is a wide, circular mass on the finger, while an elongated shape of the same weight runs along the finger and looks longer and slimmer: a 4 carat oval measures about 12.2 × 9.0 mm, an emerald about 11.1 × 7.9 mm and a radiant or elongated cushion about 9.9 × 7.6 mm.

How big does a 4 carat diamond look on the hand, ear and neck?

On the finger, the eye judges a stone against the width of the finger beside it. A 4 carat round, 10.3 mm across, covers this much of the finger's width:

US ring size Finger width Width covered by a 4 carat round
5 15.7 mm about 66%
6.5 16.9 mm about 61%
8 18.1 mm about 57%

Even on a size 8 finger a 4 carat round covers more than half the width, and on a slim hand it is a true statement. See a 4 carat ring on your own ring size.

On the ear, a pair of 4 carat studs means four carats in each ear: each stud is about 10.3 mm across and the pair is 8 carats total weight, a dramatic look. If a pair is sold as 4 carats total weight, each stud is 2 carats and about 8.2 mm across. See 4 carat studs on an ear.

On the neck, a 4 carat round pendant is the same 10.3 mm stone with the bail above it. A 4 carat pear hung point up measures about 12.6 × 8.4 mm. See a 4 carat pendant on a neckline.

Which shape suits a 4 carat diamond?

Elongated shapes, for proportion as much as size. An oval, emerald or radiant distributes the weight along the finger and reads as elegant rather than simply large.

A 4 carat oval is a good example. Set lengthwise, its width covers about 54 percent of a US size 6.5 finger, against 61 percent for a 4 carat round, while its 12.2 mm length runs along the finger.

Why do cut and setting matter most at 4 carats?

Because proportional errors scale with the stone. A cut that is slightly too deep hides a visible amount of weight in the pavilion, so a poorly cut 4 carat can look smaller than its weight suggests and show a dark center where light should return. At this size, pay for cut before carat.

The setting needs to be stronger too. A 4 carat stone is heavy enough to work a standard four-prong head loose over years of daily wear, so choose six prongs or a full bezel on a reinforced shank. A low profile wears far better than a high cathedral setting, which puts a 10 mm stone well above the finger, where it catches on sleeves. Platinum is the more secure metal at this weight: it bends rather than snaps, so a prong under stress deforms instead of failing.

What does a 4 carat lab grown diamond cost?

Mined diamond prices rise steeply with carat weight, because large rough is genuinely rare. Lab grown prices rise far more gently. A lab grown diamond typically costs 60 to 80 percent less than a mined diamond of the same carat, cut, clarity and color. They are the same material with the same hardness and optical properties, so the difference is origin and rarity rather than quality. At 4 carats, that gap is at its most meaningful.
