When shopping for a lab-grown diamond ring, you will encounter IGI certification. Some listings include it prominently. Others do not mention it at all. Here is exactly what IGI certification means, when it matters, and what to look for.
IGI stands for the International Gemological Institute. It is one of the world's largest independent diamond grading laboratories, and the leading certification body for lab-grown diamonds specifically. IGI grades diamonds on the same 4C system as the GIA (cut, color, clarity, and carat) and issues a certificate, called a report, that documents the grading.
Yes. IGI was one of the first major laboratories to develop grading standards specifically for lab-grown diamonds, and it remains the most widely used certification body in the lab-grown diamond category. An IGI-certified lab-grown diamond has been independently verified for its cut, color, clarity, and carat by gemologists at IGI, so the grade on the certificate is not self-reported by the seller.
For lab-grown diamonds, IGI is the industry standard. The GIA has historically been considered the most prestigious grading authority for mined diamonds. IGI has built equivalent credibility specifically in the lab-grown diamond space, and its lab-grown diamond reports are widely accepted by the jewelry industry, by insurance providers, and by buyers globally.
Both institutions grade diamonds independently and with consistency. For lab-grown diamonds, IGI reports are the industry norm and are fully trusted.
At Ronora, IGI certification is included for every lab grown diamond of 1.0 carats and above, each with its own report. This follows the industry standard, under which diamonds below 1 carat are typically not independently certified because the cost of certification relative to the stone's value is not justified for the buyer. Smaller diamonds in pave settings, halos, and side stones are graded and selected to the same VVS-VS, D-E-F standards but do not carry individual certificates.
